MIAMI, June 25 (UPI) -- Hurricane Cosme was likely near peak intensity Tuesday and was expected to weaken as it headed west-northwest into the Pacific Ocean, forecasters said.
In its 8 p.m. PDT update, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said the center of Cosme was 410 miles south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas and about 525 miles west-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, with top sustained winds of 85 mph. The storm was moving west-northwest at 14 mph and was expected to remain on a west-northwest track while slowing down slightly during the next two days.
Cosme -- the second hurricane of the Pacific season -- is expected to weaken gradually Wednesday and Thursday, forecasters said.
No coastal warnings or watches were in effect but forecasters said the storm might bring heavy surf to parts of Mexico's Pacific Coast through Thursday.
The hurricane was expected to pass close to Socorro Island later Tuesday. Socorro, a small volcanic island, has about 250 residents who work at the naval station.
