ATLANTA, June 24 (UPI) -- A man authorities said was trying to rob people waiting to buy new LeBron James sneakers was shot and killed by a customer, Atlanta police said.

The man had approached customers outside a shoe store in Atlanta's Little Five Points area before dawn Saturday and tried to rob them at gunpoint, CNN reported Monday.

The people were waiting for the store to open so they could buy the LeBron X Denim, priced at $180, on the first day the shoes named for the NBA champion Miami Heat star were available.

One of the men in the group took out his own handgun and fired, Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos said.

Campos said the customer was not charged.

"A number of witnesses were interviewed and this appears to be self-defense," he said.
