Faith-healing mom charged in child's death out on bail

PHILADELPHIA, June 22 (UPI) -- A Philadelphia mother charged with murder in the faith-healing death of her infant son is free on bail.

Catherine Schaible was released Friday after Common Pleas Court Judge Benjamin Lerner set her bail $250,000 and required that she live in her parents' home under electronically monitored house arrest, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The judge said the 43-year-old woman may only leave her parents' home to go to court, to confer with her attorney or for court-supervised visits with her seven other children, the newspaper said.

Schaible and her husband Herbert, 44, are members of the First Century Gospel Church, which directs its members to rely on prayer rather than medical care for illnesses to show their faith in God.

The Schaibles are charged with third-degree murder in the April death of their 8-month-old son Brandon, who had pneumonia. The Schaibles were already on probation for the 2009 death of son Kent, 2, who also died of pneumonia.

The Schaibles' other children, ages about 8 to 17, are in foster care.

Defense attorney Mythri Jayaraman said Catherine Schaible bore less responsibility in her children's deaths because the couple adhere to church teachings that a wife must be "submissive to her husband."
