LINCOLN CITY, Ore., June 18 (UPI) -- Oregon authorities are holding a 52-year-old man on negligent homicide charges in the death of soccer ball dribbler Richard Swanson of Seattle.
Swanson, 42, died last month after being struck from behind by a truck in Lincoln County while trying to walk to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup, The (Portland) Oregonian reported.
Swanson's 10,000-mile journey to Brazil while dribbling a soccer ball for charity was supposed to last a year.
Lincoln City Police Lt. Jerry Palmer said a blue One World soccer ball was found with Swanson but police don't think he was dribbling at the time he was killed.
In a video Swanson posted shortly before his death, he talks about how excited he is to be making the trip.
Scott Van Hiatt, 52, who was driving the truck that hit Swanson along U.S. Highway 101 was arrested Monday and is being held on $50,000 bond. A court appearance was scheduled Tuesday afternoon.
