Malia Brooks, 32, who was suspended several months ago by the Simi Valley Unified School District, surrendered to police Tuesday, KTLA-TV in Los Angeles reported. She was being held in lieu of $2 million bail.
Simi Valley Police Detective Casey Nicholson said Brooks was teaching sixth grade at the Garden Grove Elementary School when the investigation began in February. She was suspended and later resigned.
Brooks faces a total of five charges, including lewd acts with a child under 14, Nicholson said. Investigators say they believe there was only one victim.
"The school and district administration have fully cooperated with the Simi Valley Police investigation," the district said in a statement.
Brooks, a mother of two, is divorced, KTLA said. In October 2011, a local newspaper, the Ventura County Star, featured her as a "cook du jour."
