Ten hospitalized after two boats crash off Elliott Key in Florida

MIAMI, June 10 (UPI) -- Ten of 18 passengers were hospitalized after two boats crashed near Elliott Key, Fla., in Biscayne National Park, officials said.

The crash occurred Sunday evening when a 36-foot powerboat with about 16 people aboard collided with a boat carrying two people, The Miami Herald reported.

The second vessel sank. Officials didn't say what type of boat it was.

"It was a violent collision," Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino said. "We're very fortunate no one was killed."

One of the injured was airlifted to an area hospital and the other nine were hospitalized after they were brought to shore, Pino said.
