June 10 (UPI) -- A Bullmastiff has been put down after it attacked and killed a 5-year-old boy from Moore, Okla., one of the communities ravaged by recent tornadoes.

According to KTHV, the unidentified child was staying with family friends in Arkansas after his home was destroyed.

"The child was putting on some shoes and was crying and upset," Garland County Deputy Scott Hinojosa told KARK TV in Little Rock. "The dog possibly took that as being aggressive and at that time the child was attacked."

Authorities described the boy's injuries as "major lacerations" to his upper body. He died at at the hospital.

"You can't imagine, you know, what this family and friends are going through right now," Hinojosa added.
