NEWTOWN, Conn., June 10 (UPI) -- A telephone threat forced the lockdown of schools Monday in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman killed 20 children and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary.
The FBI joined the investigation after a telephone threat was made against students and faculty at the community's Hawley School, a K-4 facility, the Hartford Courant reported.
Assistant Superintendent Linda Gejda told the newspaper students have been dismissed for the day, although they may be late getting home.
Gejda told the Courant the call came in at 2:05 p.m. The Hawley School security staff, local police recommended a "modified lockdown" throughout the system. She did not define what a "modified lockdown" is.
High school and middle school students had already been dismissed when lockdown occurred. Newtown High School was put in "soft lockdown," a statement from the district said on Twitter.
The Sandy Hook Elementary shootings occurred in December. Adam Lanza, 20, killed his mother before going to the school and committing the massacre. He then killed himself.
