Elderly women escape limo fire

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., June 10 (UPI) -- A limo carrying a group of 10 elderly women to a party in Walnut Creek, Calif., burst into flames while idling inside a gated community, officials said.

No one was injured in the Sunday morning fire, the Contra Costa Times, Walnut Creek, Calif., reported.

The women, most of whom were in their 90s, were getting into the limousine at the Rossmoor gated community when the fire started.

Judy Becker, who lives in the gated community, said two caregivers on hand managed to pull all of the women out of the vehicle before the fire grew.

"I was told she dashed to the doors, and with the other caregiver, started helping out those with walkers and canes, before the fire really erupted," Becker said.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and quickly put the fire, the newspaper said.

Walnut Creek police Lt. Lanny Edwards said police are investigating the fire. No criminal charges have been filed since the incident.

The owner of the limo, who asked not to be named, said the fire was caused by an electrical problem.

On May 4, another limo fire on the San Mateo Bridge in California's San Francisco Bay caught fire. Five people were killed in that incident, including a new bride.
