Mother arraigned on murder charge in newborn's death

RICHMOND, Va., June 6 (UPI) -- A Virginia woman whose newborn daughter was found dead in a Dumpster was arraigned Thursday on charges of first-degree murder, officials said.

Shavaughn Robinson, 27, gave birth to the baby girl May 28 in a bathroom in Richmond's Lee Medical Building. The girl was found dead later that evening.

At Robinson's arraignment Thursday, Richmond Circuit Court Judge Beverly W. Snukals appointed Po Chau, a supervising assistant public defender, to represent Robinson, the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch reported.

Chau is also representing Robinson on a felony charge of concealing a dead body in connection with the girl's death.

"Like any normal person charged with murder, clearly, it's a shock," Chau said after the Thursday hearing.
