Missing BYU student's body found on mountain trail

PROVO, Utah, June 6 (UPI) -- Rescue workers in Utah have found the body of a missing Brigham Young University student along a mountain trail, officials said.

The body of Tyler Mayle was found Wednesday night at the bottom of a cliff in the hills near BYU's Provo campus, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Mayle, an avid hiker from Windsor, Colo., had been missing since Saturday, when he left campus to go on a day hike.

Officials said they located the body with the help of a man who said he may have seen Mayle Saturday in the area his body was found.

"He said he was a bow hunter and that he liked to look up on the mountain with his spotting scope after getting home from work. He was doing that Saturday when he said he spotted a guy who he thought had to be [Mayle]," Provo Fire Battalion Chief Tom Augustus said.

Provo police Lt. Mathew Siufanua said initial evidence suggested Mayle had fallen.

"It appears he did fall [but] we are having our investigators go up there an actually conduct a death investigation," Siufanua said. "We don't make any assumptions."

Because of the rugged terrain and darkness Wednesday night, Mayle's body was secured on the mountain, to be recovered Thursday.
