VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., June 3 (UPI) -- A house fire in Virginia Beach, Va., caused by cigarettes and illegal fireworks left one man dead and another person hospitalized early Monday, officials said.

The fire was reported shortly before 3 a.m. by a neighbor who heard popping sounds coming from the house, The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reported.

When firefighters arrived, they found Erik Stephen Ervin dead inside the home and a woman, whose name was not reported, in critical condition, Battalion Chief James Ramsey said. She was transported to Sentara Norfolk General for treatment.

The home was destroyed.

Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be a combination of improperly disposed cigarettes and illegal fireworks, Ramsey said.
