NEWTON, Mass., June 2 (UPI) -- Police in Newton, Mass., shot and killed a bear that was in a tree early Sunday due to concerns for public safety, officials said.

The bear was discovered on a limb of the tree that hung over a highway, The Boston Globe reported.

Police first shot the bear with two tranquilizer darts, but the darts failed to subdue the animal.

The decision to kill the bruin was then made due to public safety concerns, police said. The bear was shot once and then again after it fell to the ground.
