SANTA CRUZ, Calif., June 1 (UPI) -- A California man was arrested with 48 weapons and 50,000 rounds of ammunition he allegedly planned to use in the robbery of $110,000, police said.
Nicholas Yukich, 54, of Live Oak, appeared in court Wednesday, where he was charged with one felony count of conspiracy to commit grand theft and 10 felony counts of possessing illegal assault weapons, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Santa Cruz County Assistant District Attorney Ross Taylor said Yukich, a community safety officer with the University of California at Santa Cruz, received information on the security detail at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and decided to pull of a heist. The suspect initially planned to rob cash carts as workers transported money to a safe in November, but decided to wait until Memorial Day weekend, when cash flow on the boardwalk would be higher, prosecutors said.
The estimated amount of money to be in the cash carts that weekend was $110,000.
Yukich allegedly conducted surveillance on cash cart workers for nine months, and then devised a plan and enlisted the help of several other people to carry it out. He also allegedly stockpiles weapons for the heist.
One of Yukich's alleged conspirators alerted police to the plot five days before the robbery was to take place.
Police carried out a raid at Yukich's home where they allegedly found plans for the robbery on his computer, 48 weapons that included illegal firearms, shotguns, handguns, and stockpiles of ammunition.
Yukich was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
