WEST HARTFORD, Conn., May 30 (UPI) -- A Connecticut woman said she was attacked by a bear as she was trying to protect her dog.

Sharon Flannery, of West Hartford, called police at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday after two black bear cubs and their mother wandered into her yard and tried to attack her dog, WVIT-TV, New Britain, Conn., reported.

Flannery said she had just let her dog, Maggie, out when the bears showed up.

"Maggie came running out of the bushes, over the fountain and b-lined it into the house," Flannery said.

The mother bear then gave chase and tried to follow Maggie, Flannery said.

"The bear was right there, then it was here and then it was right in front of me," Flannery said. "I screamed and I yelled. It started poking its head, in so I kicked it."

The bear eventually gave up and climbed into a tree with her cubs.

Flannery suffered a puncture wound and several scratches to her lower leg.

"I didn't notice there was blood on my ankle until I started yelling about the bear almost coming into the house. I looked down and said, 'Oh my God, a bear bit me,'" she said.

Flannery called police after the attack, who came and tranquilized all of the bears. The mother was euthanized and tested for rabies as a precaution and the cubs were transported to another area and released.
