The boy's great-great-grandmother called police Wednesday afternoon, officials said. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said the boy, identified as Trenton Mathis, shot himself in the face with a 9mm pistol, the Tyler (Texas) Morning Telegraph reported.
He was airlifted to a trauma center in Tyler, but later died from his injuries.
How the boy found the gun is still under investigation, the sheriff's office said.
So far, no criminal charges have been filed, the Morning Telegraph said.
