Arias sends upbeat tweet as prosecutors mull new sentencing trial

PHOENIX, May 28 (UPI) -- Convicted murderer Jodi Arias has sent out a message of optimism as prosecutors consider whether to hold a second trial on her sentencing.

Quoting Maya Angelou, Arias tweeted, "When you learn, teach. When you get, give."

Arias' sentencing trial ended last week with a jury unable to decide whether to give her the death penalty or life in prison.

Support may be growing for prosecutors to drop the death penalty, ABC News said Tuesday. The Arizona Republic, in an editorial over the Memorial Day weekend, said a new jury should not be seated to rehear the penalty phase of Arias' trial.

"The trial would drag on, adding to its multimillion dollar cost, " said the newspaper. "By extending mercy to Arias, prosecutors can grant mercy to this community as well."

The 32-year-old Arias was convicted May 8 of murdering her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander. Jurors deadlocked on whether she deserves the death penalty.

In a statement after her conviction, the prosecutor vowed to retry the sentencing phase.

A new jury could begin hearing evidence as early as July.
