Suspect accused of killing elderly couple, assaulting great-grandchild

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, May 27 (UPI) -- A registered sex offender was arraigned in Alaska Sunday, charged with killing an elderly couple and sexually assaulting their 2-year-old great-granddaughter.

Bail was set at $1.5 million for Jerry Andrew Active, 24, who was arraigned on murder, sexual assault, sexual abuse of a minor and burglar charges in an Anchorage courtroom.

Police allege Active climbed into an Anchorage apartment through an unlocked window Saturday night, killed Touch Chea, 73, and Sorn Sreap, 71, and sexually assaulted their great-granddaughter.

Active was arrested a few blocks away after he fought with members of the victims' family, the newspaper said.

"He took the old, the innocent," Von Seng, the grandson of the slain couple and father of the girl who was assaulted, said of the suspect. "Come face me."

Seng had been at a movie with his wife and their 4-year-old son when the slayings and assault occurred.

The couple died of blunt force trauma, investigators said.

Prosecutor Jenna Gruenstein said the charges against Active and his criminal background make him an "extraordinary danger to the community, to a degree that we rarely see in Anchorage or Alaska." She said it appeared Active targeted his victims at random.
