Teen arrested for Columbine-like planned attack

WEST ALBANY, Ore., May 26 (UPI) -- Oregon police said a 17-year-old student accused of planning to bomb his school was inspired by the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo.

Grant Alan Acord was arrested Thursday after police discovered a cache of homemade bombs under the floorboards of his room at his mother's house in West Albany, Ore., The (Portland) Oregonian reported.

He will be charged as an adult on suspicion of attempted aggravated murder and faces two counts of possession of a destructive device and two counts of manufacture of a destructive device, the newspaper said.

Police said they recovered at least six bombs from Acord's room, including a pipe bomb, a napalm bomb, Molotov cocktails and a bomb made with drain cleaner.

Benton County District Attorney John Haroldson said the 1999 Columbine shootings allegedly served as an inspiration for the teen, who police said had extensive notes and written plans in his room on how to carry out his attack. Acord allegedly wanted to top the Columbine attack at his own school, West Albany High School, CNN reported.

"This was a very methodical process," Haroldson said. "He took time to even get to this point."

Colorado teens Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 fellow students and one teacher, and injured 24 people April 20, 1999, before killing themselves.

Acord is scheduled to make his first appearance in court Tuesday, CNN said.

West Albany High School was swept twice by police and was determined to be safe, Haroldson said.
