NEW YORK, May 25 (UPI) -- The sister of a Chinese diplomat was caught shoplifting at Macy's in New York, the New York Post reports.

Citing police sources it did not name, the newspaper said Saturday Guo Wang, 37, was arrested Thursday at the Herald Square store, the chain's flagship.

Her sister-in-law, Minga Wang, arrived at the police station quickly with another person, and both said they worked for the Chinese consulate.

"They were literally pounding on the desk," a police source told the Post.

The consulate told the Post Minga Wang and her companion were not listed as employees.

At an appearance in criminal court, Guo Wang was given an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal. She was ordered to perform a day of community service and to have a counseling session.

Her brother, Bangfu Wang, who works for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in New York, was said to be in China.

Guo Wang does not have diplomatic immunity, which applies only to diplomats, their spouses and minor children.
