SAN ANTONIO, May 25 (UPI) -- Flash floods fueled by 10 inches of rain left one woman dead and one presumed drowned in San Antonio Saturday, and authorities urged evacuations in some areas.
The San Antonio Express-News reported witnesses told police a 29-year-old woman died when she was swept away by the current after getting out of her car when it was carried off a road by a rain-swollen creek. Police Sgt. Marcial Luevano said her body was found pinned against a fence downstream. A male passenger survived.
In the second apparent drowning, firefighters were trying to rescue a 60-year-old woman trapped in her car in Leon Creek when the car rolled over. Firefighters were knocked into the water and the woman's car was washed away. The newspaper said crews were trying to recover her body.
Fire department spokesman Christian Bove told CNN department personnel had been involved in at least 100 rescues since the flooding started.
Dozens of roads were closed in the area, power lines were down and several structure fires were reported, the newspaper said.
WOAI-TV, San Antonio, reported a Wilson County judge issued an evacuation order for people living along the San Antonio River from Elmendorf to below Floresville.
The TV station said the San Antonio River was forecast to crest at about 60 feet Sunday morning in central Wilson County, below the record of 64.7 feet set in 1998.
"This a life-threatening situation and should not be taken lightly or with a wait-and-see attitude," the county emergency office said in a statement. "If you are in the area of the San Antonio River and have been flooded before, you will flood again."
