Ex-Detroit mayor Kilpatrick gets new attorney

DETROIT, Minn., May 24 (UPI) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick dismissed his lawyer, a move that will likely delay his sentencing in a corruption case, court documents said.

Thursday Kilpatrick dropped attorney James C. Thomas, who defended Kilpatrick through several scandals over five years, Tthe Detroit News reported Friday.

Like Thomas, Kilpatrick's new court-appointed attorney, Harold Gurewitz, will be funded by taxpayers to handle pre-sentencing matters and Kilpatrick's bid for an acquittal or new trial. Gurewitz has been a member of Kilpatrick's legal team, the newspaper said.

Kilpatrick was convicted of 24 corruption charges, including racketeering conspiracy, on March 11.
