SPRINGFIELD, Ill., May 23 (UPI) -- A gun bill introduced in the Illinois House would create a statewide concealed carry permit while the Senate would allow Chicago to set its own rules.
Backers of the House version say it is more likely to win legislative approval, the Chicago Tribune reported. It was introduced Wednesday.
The Legislature has a June 9 deadline to adopt some sort of bill after a federal court last year overturned the Illinois ban on concealed weapons. But the Tribune said the issue, like some others recently, could end up with a stalemate between the two houses.
The Senate bill also requires people applying for concealed-carry permits to give a reason for needing one. The House measure would eliminate that requirement.
The House bill also does away with a home-rule provision that would allow the Chicago Police Department to issue permits for the city and to ban concealed weapons from some locations.
