WASHINGTON, May 22 (UPI) -- A witness in the trial of the man convicted of killing Washington intern Chandra Levy had a hidden past as a government informant, a court hearing revealed.
New information provided at a hearing in Washington Tuesday, where lawyers attempted to get a new trial for Ingmar Guandique, convicted in 2010, indicated former Fresno, Calif., gang member Armando Morales shared tips about violent crimes and informed authorities about drugs and weapons at a penitentiary in Atlanta, McClatchy Newspapers reported Wednesday.
Guandique's defense attorneys said Morales traded information in prison for better treatment, and were unaware of his informant status during Guandique's trial.
"That information may have impeached Mr. Morales' testimony," District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Gerald Fisher said.
Levy, a Bureau of Prisons intern, vanished May 1, 2001. Her disappearance attracted national notoriety after speculation, later confirmed, she was romantically involved with then-U.S. Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif. Her remains were found in a Washington park in May 2002, McClatchy said.
