NEW YORK, May 17 (UPI) -- The New York Police Department said its proposal for security at the new World Trade Center includes checkpoints and guard houses.
The $40 million plan, presented Thursday in a required environmental impact statement, shows security checkpoints, numerous "bollards" or vertical posts meant to stop vehicles and an elaborate "sally port" so police can enter and check tour buses, the New York Post reported Friday.
The newspaper called it a "plan to build a fortress around the World Trade Center."
Seven traffic intersections in the 16-acre section of New York's Financial District would have barricades controlled by police in 11-foot guard stations, the plan indicated.
"It's going to be better for pedestrians and it's going to be worse for vehicles. That's a good thing. The bad thing is that you have these checkpoints that make it look like an armed camp or a gated community," said Jeff Zupan of the city's Regional Plan Association.
