More than $4 billion pledged to recovery in Mali

May 17, 2013 at 2:20 PM

UNITED NATIONS, May 17 (UPI) -- The United Nations welcomed a multibillion-dollar pledge from the international community to support a recovery plan for Mali, it said Friday.

The funds, totaling 3.35 billion euros ($4.17 billion), were pledged at the High-Level Conference on Support and Development of Mali in Brussels, and will contribute to Mali's Sustainable Recovery Plan, a U.N. statement said.

The West African nation is emerging from a recent crisis in which its northern territory was overtaken by extremists. Thousands of people were uprooted by the conflict.
