DALLAS, May 15 (UPI) -- Tornadoes slammed parts of North Texas Wednesday night, damaging dozens of homes, authorities said. There were reports of people injured.

Dallas TV stations WFAA-TV and KDFW-TV said a mile-wide tornado was confirmed on the ground near Rio Vista in Johnson County, about 5 miles southwest of Cleburne. Winds hit 80 miles per hour at a Cleburne-area hospital, WDFW-TV said.

KDFW-TV reported a line of storms moving through North Texas had spawned multiple tornadoes that caused damage to homes, large hail and heavy rains.

WFAA-TV reported a tornado was on the ground near Granbury and the nearby Rancho Brazos subdivision was being evacuated about 8:30 p.m. local time after about 40 homes were damaged. The Dallas TV station said there were reports of people injured and a possible gas leak.

The Dallas Morning News reported Granbury officials requested medical help from other counties.

Traffic was at a standstill in Granbury as emergency crews converged on the area hardest hit by the twister. Sirens would be heard blaring.

WFAA-TV said the American Red Cross said based on initial reports it believed Hood, Johnson, Parker, Wise and Montague counties had received the most damage.

There were multiple tornadoes on the ground in Hood County, WFAA-TV said.

The TV station said there also were reports of tornado damage in Millsap in western Parker County.

The Morning News reported the National Weather Service said Granbury was pummeled by baseball-sized hail and Millsap was hit by hail stones bigger than golf balls.

The newspaper said power outages had darkened thousands of homes in the Grand Prairie area and elsewhere in the region.

The newspaper said about 37 flights have been diverted from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
