Five Central American snakes, two American alligators, one crocodile, a Gila monster and an alligator snapping turtle were taken from the house Tuesday to the Racine, Wis., Zoo, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
Dead animals, including an alligator and snake as well as the carcass of a fawn and the skeleton of another alligator, were found in the backyard, police Lt. Brad Kemen said.
The man listed on property records as the owner of the house couldn't be reached for comment, the newspaper said.
Neighbors were surprised to watch the animals being taken from the house in plastic bins.
"Never in my life would I ever think that someone, a neighbor, has exotic animals," said Brian Berthelsen.
Kenosha Police and Racine Zoo officials were aided by the state Department of Natural Resources in rescuing the animals, the newspaper said.
