Jason Anthony Bulmer and Morgan Lane Arnold, 14, appeared in court Monday by videolink, The Baltimore Sun reported. Both were being held without bail in the Howard County detention center.
The couple were arrested Friday after Denise Geiger called police from the home she shared with Dennis Lane in Ellicott City, an affluent community about 10 miles west of Baltimore. Geiger alleged Bulmer attacked Lane. When police arrived they found Lane stabbed to death and Bulmer with blood on his hands and clothes, the newspaper said.
Investigative reports released Monday said Bulmer told police Arnold wanted him to kill her father, a prominent local businessman and blogger, and Geiger, promising they would go to California afterward. She allegedly told him to stab Lane 10 times in the throat and Geiger 15.
"I don't know what I'll do if you don't do it tonight," Arnold allegedly told her boyfriend.
Both the defendants are students at Mount Hebron High School in Ellicott City. Cindi Arnold, Morgan's mother, described her daughter in a statement as a "special needs" child.
Gary Bulmer, Jason's father, said he had been worried about the age difference between his son and his girlfriend. At 19, Jason is only a sophomore.
"He's a good kid, but he's slow in school and can't finish high school," Gary told the Sun. "He gets along fine with other kids."
