[VIDEO] Heat, ice and wind all part of U.S. weather panoply

LAS VEGAS, May 13 (UPI) -- People in Las Vegas girded themselves Monday for their first 100-degree day of the year.

But while it was heating up in Nevada, some people in Minnesota were still dealing with the remnants of winter with high winds pushing mounds of ice into houses lining Lake Mille Lacs. Strong winds also brought trees down in Manhattan during the weekend.

National Weather Service meteorologist Larry Jensen told the Las Vegas Sun near-record temperatures were expected in the region Monday and Tuesday.

"We're looking at our first triple-degree reading at McCarran tomorrow [Monday]," Jenson said, predicting it would reach 101 degrees during the afternoon at McCarran International Airport or just 2 degrees short of the record set in 1996.

WDIO-TV, Duluth, Minn., reported ice-out on Lake Mille Lacs in northern Minnesota literally meant the ice leaving the lake like a glacier. Darla Johnson at Izaty's Resort said the ice heaves Saturday pushed up onto shore and into homes. Authorities had to deploy a bulldozer to push the ice away when it threatened high-voltage units, she said.

WNBC-TV, New York, said crews worked Sunday to clean up the aftermath of a storm that toppled several trees in lower Manhattan. The TV station said the Saturday storm sent branches hurtling through glass over the patio of the Merchants River House restaurant.

Crews started cutting up the fallen trees Saturday night but stopped after some residents complained their chainsaws were too noisy, WNBC-TV said.
