Minnesota Senate passes same-sex marriage bill

MINNEAPOLIS, May 13 (UPI) -- The Minnesota Senate Monday voted 37-30 to pass a same-sex marriage bill, putting Minnesota on the path to become the 12th state to recognize gay marriage.

Three Democrats -- LeRoy Stumpf, Dan Sparks and Lyle Koenen -- voted against the bill, while one Republican, Branden Petersen, voted yes, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

The state House of Representatives passed the bill 75-59 Thursday.

Gov. Mark Dayton said he will sign it into law at a Tuesday ceremony on the south steps of the Capitol in St. Paul. It will go into effect Aug. 1.

In the 2012 election, Minnesotans defeated an effort to constitutionally state marriage was between a man and a woman.
