CHICAGO, May 8 (UPI) -- A non-contagious form of bacterial meningitis has killed a 16-year-old Chicago high school student, school officials said.
Savon Smith, who attended Lindbloom Math & Science Academy, was found dead at his home by his mother, WLS-TV, Chicago, reported.
Smith's mother Nicole said she tried to wake Savon up to go to school and he "wouldn't wake up."
She said her son had complained of a headache and slept most of the day before he died.
Chicago Public Schools said no other cases of meningitis have been reported at Lindbloom and there is no immediate health risk to students or staff.
However, CPS is advising parents and students to seek medical attention if they develop a sudden onset of fever, headache or a stiff neck.
Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light and an altered mental state or confusion.
