PRINCETON, Mass., May 7 (UPI) -- An American will be extradited to the United Kingdom to face charges he spiked a classmate's wine with antifreeze, a federal judge ruled.
Alexander Hilton, a native of Princeton, Mass., was a student at the prestigious St. Andrews University in Scotland in March 2011 when he allegedly attempted to kill Robert Forbes, an American classmate at St. Andrews, Courthouse News Service reported.
Hilton allegedly gave Forbes a bottle of red wine spiked with methanol, a major ingredient in antifreeze, and encouraged him to drink the entire bottle, investigators said.
Forbes became sick from the cocktail and initially lost his eyesight, but quick medical treatment saved his life and his sight is returning, the news service said.
Investigators said Hilton had done an online search of methanol poisoning and its long-term effects. They also found a plastic funnel and glass-measuring jug in his dorm room.
After Scottish police questioned him and charged him with attempted murder, Hilton returned to the United States to live with his parents.
At the United Kingdom's request, U.S. Magistrate Jennifer Boal granted a certificate Friday in Boston that will allow Hilton to be extradited to face the charges.
