SACRAMENTO, May 7 (UPI) -- Health officials in California said some 2,000 people and their parents may have been exposed to identity theft because their birth records weren't secured.

Those born between May and September 1974 in Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Shasta, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter and Tehama counties may be affected, Bay Area Newsgroup said Tuesday.

Though they declined to say where the birth records were found -- the data include Social Security numbers, birth dates and information on the parents -- officials suggested those impacted take steps to monitor their credit and bank accounts.

No incidents of unauthorized use of the information has been identified, officials said.
