Woman hospitalized after being attacked by pit bulls in Florida

May 6, 2013 at 1:17 PM

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., May 6 (UPI) -- A Florida woman was hospitalized with "heavy wounds" after being mauled by a pack of five pit bulls, a law enforcement officer said.

Brandy Bookamer was taking a walk with her 6-year-old daughter in Florida's Flagler County Sunday night when the dogs attacked, The Daytona Beach (Fla.) News-Journal reported.

Bookamer suffered "heavy wounds," said Flagler County sheriff's Lt. Bob Weber. Her daughter was uninjured.

"She may have been fending off the dogs because of her daughter," Weber said, "There were puncture wounds and scratches to her extremities."

Bookamer was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. Her condition was not reported.

The dogs, all pit bulls, were seized later by Flagler County Animal Control, Weber said. He said the dogs belong to local resident Donald Hayes
