S.C. animal advocates angry state agency destroyed goose eggs, nest

COLUMBIA, S.C., May 5 (UPI) -- South Carolina animal advocates said they're angry a state investigative agency destroyed the eggs of a pair of geese, removed their nest and chased them away.

Thom Berry, spokesman for the State Law Enforcement Division in Columbia, said Saturday the Canada geese were making it difficult for people to get into the lab, The State newspaper in Columbia reported.

"We had people who were chased or bitten, and a couple of instances where the male flew at them," Berry said, adding the geese went after him a few times.

Berry said SLED removed the nest April 3, less than a week after the geese arrived. Once the nest was gone, the adult geese quit the SLED property within a few days.

Some animal lovers said they organized a memorial service for the geese Sunday to mourn the loss of the birds and their eggs.

"We are fighting against institutional cruelty," said Keith Edwards said of the animal advocates.
