Runner, 23, dies during Pittsburgh half marathon

May 5, 2013 at 9:51 PM

PITTSBURGH, May 5 (UPI) -- A 23-year-old man died running the Pittsburgh half marathon Sunday, his mother said.

Race officials said Kyle Chase Johnson collapsed at the 12-mile mark of today's half marathon, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. An autopsy will be performed Monday.

Johnson's family said the young man had run a half marathon in New York City recently with "zero problem."

Mary Beth Deal said her son, a 2012 Penn State graduate who moved to Pittsburgh recently, had been "on top of the world" after getting an accounting job at Deloitte & Touche.

"He was a wonderful, wonderful son," she said. "He loved to read, he was smart, he was kind and handsome."
