SUFFOLK, Va., May 5 (UPI) -- A small plane crashed in Virginia this weekend, killing two men from the Baltimore area, police said Sunday.

The Virginia State Police said the pilot, Berry Raymond Newgent, 73, of Davidsonville, Md., and the passenger, Thomas Berry Newgent, 51, of Westminster, Md., died when their plane went down in a field near Suffolk, Va., Saturday, The Baltimore Sun reported.

The crash occurred after the plane attempted to land several times, likely at a nearby airstrip, police said.

An air show was held in Suffolk during the weekend, but the plane was not involved in the event, police said.
