Vet: Medical pot can help sick pets

NEW YORK, May 4 (UPI) -- A California veterinarian says medical marijuana helped his dog while she was in pain from cancer that could not be treated.

In an interview with Vice magazine, Doug Kramer, who runs Vet Guru -- a website promising "enlightened therapeutics" -- said using a marijuana extract allowed him to postpone the time when his dog, Nikita, had to be put down, ABC News reported.

"She had gone through all of the traditional pain medications, even steroids. When it became clear that she was nearing the end, that's when she had nothing to lose, as long as it didn't hurt her," he said. "At the first dosage, she was up and around."

Kramer has a guide to dosing pets with medical marijuana for sale on Vet Guru.

A spokeswoman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said the group supports anything that helps pets but she said pets have to have a genuine need for marijuana, citing instances in which people deliberately get animals high or drunk for amusement.
