Man charged with impersonating police officer to rape women

May 2, 2013 at 12:48 AM

MAYS LANDING, N.J., May 2 (UPI) -- A South New Jersey man who allegedly posed as an Atlantic City police officer was charged Wednesday with sexually assaulting eight women.

A grand jury handed up an indictment charging Hiten Patel, 34, of Egg Harbor City with 36 counts of sexual assault, kidnapping, impersonating a police officer and other crimes, The Press of Atlantic City reported. He has been under house arrest since he was arrested in August and posted a $1 million bond.

Investigators say Patel assaulted at least eight women in 2011 and 2012, the last one on Aug. 2, 2012. In that case, a 21-year-old said she was approached by a man in Pennsauken, Camden County, who said he was a police detective and ordered her to get in his van. She said she was driven 70 miles to Atlantic City and raped near the Atlantic City Aquarium.

Patel was charged with seven more rapes after Atlantic City police detectives and the FBI examined reports of other sexual assaults.
