Search for keys in Fla. storm drain ends in cardiac arrest, rescue

MIAMI BEACH, Fla., May 1 (UPI) -- A man who nearly drowned searching for keys dropped into a Miami Beach storm drain drank a half pint of rum before he entered the drain, police said.

After Madgiana Holverson, 47, accidentally dropped her keys into the storm drain in bad weather Tuesday, Richard Brandenburg, 49, volunteered to dive in and find them, after a smoke and a drink. He entered the cold water three times, not resurfacing on the last attempt, police said.

After a passerby attempted a rescue by partially lowering himself into the drain, Miami Beach Fire Rescue arrived and recovered Brandenburg, who had suffered cardiac arrest, by removing a nearby manhole cover, The Miami Herald reported.

Brandenburg was recovering in a hospital, the newspaper said.
