California boy, 13, confesses to driving dad's car, hitting 2 cars

CHULA VISTA, Calif., May 1 (UPI) -- A California boy, 13, confessed to driving his father's car, hitting two parked vehicles in a school parking lot and fleeing, police said.

The boy's 21-year-old brother Tuesday night was, with his father's knowledge, driving his father's Nissan Frontier SUV. The 13-year-old and his friend were passengers in the car, U-T San Diego reported.

While in the parking lot at around 6:00 p.m. at Otay Elementary School, the older brother left the other two alone, U-T reported. The younger brother began driving and his friend grabbed the steering wheel, causing the car to hit the two parked vehicles. Both cars had minor damage, U-T reported.

When the older brother returned, all three fled. Police found them soon afterward and the 13-year-old confessed, Chula Vista Police Lt. Scott Arsenault said.

Police wrote a misdemeanor hit-and-run report that will be evaluated for possible charges, Arsenault said.

The boy was released to his father, U-T reported.
