Veteran Florida cop arrested on drug charges

MIAMI, April 30 (UPI) -- A veteran Florida police officer suspended with pay after being arrested on drug charges said he was set up by his girlfriend's pimp.

Tomas Munoz, a 41-year-old sergeant who has been on the Hialeah police force for 15 years, was arrested Saturday at a Miami hotel room on charges of cocaine possession and carrying drug paraphernalia, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

Munoz said he fell in love with a woman who had a pimp.

"And he doesn't let her be free," he said. "This came about because he set the whole thing up."

Authorities received a tip Friday night that Munoz was buying crack cocaine near Miami International Airport, Hialeah police said.

The girlfriend, who police have not identified, is cooperating with the investigation and has not been charged in the case.

Hialeah police spokesman Carl Zogby said Munoz was already under investigation by internal affairs when he was arrested on drug charges.
