WASHINGTON, April 30 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said Tuesday he talked with gay NBA player Jason Collins and couldn't be prouder of him.

Obama told a White House news conference Collins exhibited courage in announcing his sexual orientation in a story published by Sports Illustrated Monday.

"American should be proud," he said, saying it's one more step in showing everyone is treated fairly.

"I'm proud of him," Obama said, calling Collins a role model.
