James Ramsey Kammeyer, 40, who police said they believed is a registered sex offender, walked into the Salt Lake City suburb police station and approached the front desk. A civilian clerk and uniformed officer approached Kammeyer, who had his hands in his pockets and was acting strangely, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
When the front desk officer asked Kammeyer to remove his hands from his pockets, Kammeyer allegedly refused, turned his back to the desk and produced a handgun, pointing it at the officer. Several other officers saw what was happening and trained their weapons on Kammeyer. The standoff ended quickly with multiple gunshots being fired, witnesses at a nearby train station said.
Kammeyer survived the shooting and was taken into custody, police said.
Police Sgt. Jason Hauer said Kammeyer had called police in December, distraught because his wife was trying to take custody of their children.
"He was threatening to cut his wrists and told our officers at that time that he wanted to die [in a] suicide by cop," Hauer said.
