N.Y.C. teen accused of throwing stillborn baby in garbage chute

NEW YORK, April 29 (UPI) -- New York City police arrested a 19-year-old woman who allegedly tossed her stillborn baby boy down a garbage chute, officials said.

Ariel Devonish-Francis, 19, was charged Sunday with unlawful disposal of a cadaver for the incident, the New York Daily News reported.

Police said Devonish-Francis gave birth an 8-month stillborn baby Saturday at her home in the West Farms Road Rehabs housing project.

Her brother was home when she gave birth but said he didn't know she was pregnant.

"She kept constantly going back and forth to the bathroom. I thought it was maybe something she ate," said Clifton Jones, 25. "If I would have known, things would have been different."

After giving birth, Devonish-Francis went to the hospital for medical treatment and told workers there that she had thrown the stillborn down the garbage chute in her building.

The fetus was found in a bag in the building's basement. The city medical examiner performed an autopsy Sunday and determined the baby was stillborn.
