Rain floods parts of Houston, cancels San Antonio parade

HOUSTON, April 28 (UPI) -- Heavy rain in Texas flooded several Houston suburbs and forced marchers in San Antonio's Fiesta Flambeau parade to stop midstream.

Among the hardest-hit areas was southern Harris County, where meteorologists said as much as 8 inches of rain fell in a matter of hours, flooding streets and stranding motorists. The Houston fire chief said his department responded to 150 calls for assistance because of the flooding, most coming from drivers whose vehicles stalled out in the high, fast-moving water.

No deaths were associated with the deluge, the Houston Chronicle said.

In San Antonio, a parade marking the city's annual tribute to the Battle of the Alamo was halted with only two-thirds of the groups participating having completed the parade route. The thousands who turned out for the parade were forced to scurry for shelter as the rains came, the San Antonio Express-News said.

The low pressure system bringing the inclement weather is expected to move east Sunday, through the Tennessee Valley and into parts of Georgia and the Carolinas, Accuweather.com said. Forecasters warned of similar heavy rain accompanied by strong winds that could knock down trees and power lines. An expected 1 to 2 inches will fall in the area with some places getting up to 3 inches of rain.
