NEW YORK, April 26 (UPI) -- What is believed part of the landing gear from one of the planes that hit the World Trade Center in New York turned up Friday near Ground Zero, police said.

The piece of one of the planes that hit the twin towers Sept. 11, 2001, was found at the site of a proposed Islamic community center just blocks from the trade center site, the New York Post and Daily News reported.

Surveyors found the piece wedged between two buildings. The area has been cordoned off and police are treating it as a crime scene.
