RIVERSIDE, Calif., April 22 (UPI) -- An elderly California woman was in critical condition Sunday after being attacked by a family pit bull, officials said.

Margarita Negrete, 74, of Colton underwent surgery after the attack, The (Riverside) Press-Enterprise reported.

Police were called to the woman's home Saturday, the report said. The pit bull already had killed one of the family's other dogs and had the woman on the ground, biting her.

The officers tried to pull the dog from the woman, then shot and killed it when it came after them.
