Lawsuit looms over LA reward offered in Dorner case

April 20, 2013 at 2:46 PM   |   Comments

LOS ANGELES, April 20 (UPI) -- A California park ranger plans to file a lawsuit over the $1 million reward offered in the manhunt for ex-police officer Christopher Dorner, his lawyer said.

Rick Heltebrake placed the 911 call that led to the deadly February shootout between Dorner and law enforcement officers in the mountains near Big Bear. He contends the city of Los Angeles should pay him the seven-figure reward offered for Dorner's capture.

Heltebrake put in a claim for the reward, as did a Big Bear couple who were tied up by Dorner during his killing spree that left four people dead, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

The deadline for applying for the reward expired Friday.

Heltebrake's lawyer, Allen Thomas, said in a written statement the city's recent decision to have a panel of retired judges determine who gets the reward ignores state and city law on rewards and improperly requires the ranger to accept the panel's decision.
